Minerals are naturally ubiquitous Somewhere Else. While many are commonly used for building and crafting, a number of them, of varying degrees of rarity, have inherent unique special properties, from minor things like gentle magnetism to major things like causing advanced reactions that enable things as intense as waterbreathing. Various minerals can cause similar or the same effects while attaining it different ways. How certain minerals work is still not understood - what is understood is that they do work, and they do so naturally.
