Lynguistykon: Affixes

From The Somewhere Else Encyclopedia

Affixes are morphemes appended at the beginning, middle, and/or end of a word (i.e. attached to the other morpheme(s) comprising it) to alter or deepen its meaning. Often, words are formed by combining base morphemes (bases) with affix morphemes (affixes) to easily communicate meaning; some morphemes can serve either as a base or affix. Also in certain languages/cases, the same affix morpheme(s) can be applied either at the beginning (as a prefix morpheme) or end (as a suffix morpheme) of a word interchangeably.

Infixes and Transfixes

Infixes are affixes that attach in the inner contents of a word. Transfixes are affixes broken into more than one portion with each one going in a different segment of the word.

Suffixes

Circumfixes

Circumfixes are affixes involving an addition at both the beginning and end of a word.
