A base is the morpheme(s) comprising the main portion of a word, often combined with one or more affixes to create a word with altered or deeper meaning. Some morphemes can serve either as a base morpheme or as an affix morpheme. Although all morphemes and therefore all bases carry identifiable meaning, depending on the language not all of them are used as standalone words due to linguistic conventions or because they require pairing to transfer sufficient meaning.
